The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros
In 2018, I had the privilege of hearing Sandra Cisneros speak. She read from Caramelo and talked about the immigrant experience in America. She answered questions from the audience and signed books. I was surprised, having loved her powerful vignettes in The House on Mango Street, by how soft spoken she was. But it makes sense really - her words are her voice, magnified. The experience encouraged me to introduce her work to my students. I kicked myself later for not bringing my books to get them signed and for not getting a photo with her (it's kind of a funny story), but now I think that it was meant to be. It's part of the memory I have of that night.
