Open Book by Jessica Simpson

I just spent entirely too long scrolling through my DMs trying to find the person who convinced me to read Open Book, BUT WHO CAN SAY?! I know that they found it compelling because it was about Jessica Simpson reclaiming her story after a lifetime of the media tearing her apart, and that's really all I needed to hear. I love a memoir, and while I was never a super fan, you pretty much had to be living under a pop culture rock to miss her career (and the constant media scrutiny). Rather than starting, as you might expect, at the start of her career, Simpson begins the book with the experiences that led her to rock bottom - and then examines her life in the before and after. There were things in this book that rang bells for me (Daisy Duke, the mom jeans, the infamous John Mayer incident) but there were also things that I imagine she hasn't shared publicly until now (her sexual abuse and resulting drug use). Simpson narrates the audiobook, and it's an intimate and emotional experience hearing her tell her story in her words and get choked up as she does. This was an intense read, but a satisfying one. I enjoyed hearing Simpson tell a story that I think a lot of women can identify with, famous or not: growing up, overcoming trauma, and becoming who you are.
