#NationalPoetryMonth

A friend gave me this scrunchie as part of my early birthday gift, so I'm basically a VSCO girl now, right?!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Anyway, it's #NationalPoetryMonth but since the world's on fire, I didn't feature nearly the amount of poetry I planned to - such is life. It's also William Shakespeare's birthday, so I thought I would take the time to share one of my coolest little thrift store finds - this clothbound copy of Shakespeare's sonnets! Shakespeare is part of the curriculum I cover with my high schoolers, and I love teaching his sonnets paired with Neil Gaiman's Dark Sonnet, which is one of my favorite contemporary poems. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Other classic/contemporary poetry pairings I love:
-Mary Oliver and Sarah Kay - "The Journey" and "The Type" both did things to my heart.
-Sylvia Plath and Brenna Twohy both speak about mental illness with beauty and vulnerability.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The nice thing about poetry is that it's so widely available on the internet that you can really get a feel for an author before committing to reading their book. Sarah Kay and Brenna Twohy are also spoken word poets, so you can watch them perform on YouTube! I'm trying to read more poetry, so give me your recs!
