Thirteen Doorways, Wolves Behind Them All by Laura Ruby
If I hadn't read Laura Ruby's other novel, Bone Gap, I don't know what I would have made of this book. I don't know if I would have finished it. But knowing what I know? That jacket descriptions don't do her writing justice? That her stories play with mythology and metaphor and perspective in heartbreaking and sophisticated ways? I'll follow Laura Ruby through any mysterious doorway (or novel) she dreams up. Thirteen Doorways, Wolves Behind Them All is about girls and ghosts and doors and wolves. It's a 2019 National Book Award finalist. And if you're okay with weird and wayward storytelling, you should definitely read it.
