Like me, Samantha Irby is not an egg person! But unlike me, she deals with debilitating chronic illness. The two are unrelated, but converge in her essay collection, Meaty, which chronicles her unconventional life, including caring for her chronically ill mother as a child, being diagnosed with Chron’s and UC, and becoming a writer. I love to read this kind of nonfiction, but very few people write with the kind of candor and blunt “I don’t give a fuck”-ness that Irby does. She is unapologetically her - for better or worse - and makes it clear that if you don’t care for it then you can GTFO. Meaty reminds me of So Sad Today by Melissa Broder (not a book I often use in comparisons 🤣) in that way. I know Irby has several other books out, and I’m interested in seeing how her writing has evolved! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ TW: alcoholism, abuse, caring for a chronically ill parent (MS, dementia), homelessness, suicide attempt, chronic illness (Chron’s, UC) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A note: I listened to the audiobook, which is the updated edition, not pictured. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ID: A paperback copy of Meaty stands on a white bookshelf next to a potted snake plant. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CQtt8ySgzcj/
