Fiction will always be my first love, but nonfiction has a special place in my heart, too! Elizabeth and Margaret: The Intimate World of the Windsor Sisters by Andrew Morton is a biography that specifically explores the relationship between, you guessed it, Queen Elizabeth and her late sister Margaret. The most fascinating part (aside from the humanizing details - royalty: they’re just like us!) was reading about the ways in which the journey of the royal family has mirrored itself in different generations; Edward VIII abdicating the throne to marry an American divorcĂ©e, for example. Like many who have come before and since, Elizabeth and Margaret grapple with the roles forced upon them as they try to determine their own identities and find some semblance of autonomy and happiness. From childhood to adulthood, they were each other’s opposite, but also each other’s only confidant - the only one who could possibly understand. They live(d) remarkable and incredibly privileged lives, and it’s a testament to Morton’s skill as a writer that I found myself empathizing with these women whose lives could not be any more different from my own. The only question is: do I follow up this read by finally checking out The Crown?! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ID: A hardcover copy of Elizabeth and Margaret sits on a picnic table.
