We Are Okay is a book I’ve had on my TBR after reading Everything Leads to You in 2015 (!!!) and damn does Nina LaCour know how to write a coming of age story. I love that this one takes place during the transition from high school to college, because I just don’t think there’s enough stories set during that window and *yikes* do you ever grow during that time! We Are Okay finds Marin grappling with grief, disillusionment, and betrayal in the wake of her grandfather’s death. It’s masterfully written and deals with isolation in a way that resonated with me, even though my loss was different. Not only do we see Marin come to terms with what has happened, but we also see her navigating her identity as a queer woman as well as her evolving friendship with Mabel. I love seeing how these two negotiate the transition from childhood friends to adult ones. The found family element of this story was beyond touching and really rescued the story for me as I was beginning to get lost. This is truly a character driven story with the plot taking a backseat, but it’s so artfully done that you may not even care. I really enjoy what Nina LaCour does and have already added another book of hers to my TBR. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ TW: grief, death of a loved one, mental illness ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ID: I’m holding a hardcover copy of We Are Okay so that you can see my manicure (I have long, sparkly silver and lilac nails). The hardwood floor and gauzy white curtains are visible in the background. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CQbrQuxrWKS/
