It’s been a minute since I’ve read any Joanna Shupe, so I was excited to pick up a series from her backlist (and my TBR): The Knickerbocker Club. Magnate is book one in the series and follows Elizabeth, a Washington Square heiress, and Emmett, a self made business magnate, through the streets of Gilded Age New York! Their class difference, can’t keep their hands off each other, “they don’t love me, they were forced to marry me!” romance was so much fun. Emmett is jealous and possessive, and will literally do anything for Elizabeth. I love how supportive he is of her desire to build a business trading on the NY Stock exchange, which was a really cool piece of this story. He definitely feels like a morally grey hero a la her Uptown Girls series, which is also great. Baron follows Will, a railroad baron and emerging politician (and brother to the heroine from book one) and Ava, a medium for hire. I enjoyed the premise of this one, but found it difficult after book one to find Will a really likeable character. After loving book one, this one felt just okay. Mogul follows Lily, a silver mine heiress, and Calvin, a newspaper mogul — the pair a formerly married couple who come back into each other’s orbit because of a mysterious letter. This one has a lot going on: blackmail, kidnapping, secrets and lies! I had high hopes for this second chance romance, because the first few chapters reminded me so much of one of my favorite movies, His Girl Friday, and it has some great 🌶️ scenes, but the last third of the book fell flat for me. I’m excited that I still have one more series in Shupe’s backlist to enjoy — hopefully soon!
