While Nancy Pelosi's brothers were being groomed to follow in their father's political footsteps, Nancy was being prepared for a decidedly different fate. Her journey from housewife to Speaker of the House is laid out by Molly Ball in the biography Pelosi, and it's absolutely fascinating. Her evolution from a name only people in Washington knew to a political and cultural icon reminds me a lot of RBG. They both pushed back against sexism in politics to become hugely influential politicians. They both went from quiet dissenters to outspoken ones. They both won people's admiration and censure for their quick witted retorts. Although Ball doesn't shy away from the flaws and failures of Pelosi (if you've seen the photos of her wearing kente cloth, you know they're glaring), it's clear that Ball has huge admiration for Pelosi and all she has been able to accomplish - and I do, too. · Nancy Pelosi is the highest ranking woman in politics. She is frequently the only woman in the room. And she is, STILL, one of only a handful of women (approximately 25%) that hold seats in the House and the Senate. This book and those stats are a reminder that we've got work to do. · Thanks to @librofm for providing educators like me with free audiobooks like this one. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CBfyQKoA6lU/
