This is the sixth collection of Mary Oliver poetry that I've read, and I'm fascinated by how her work is shaped by what is happening in her world. Dream Work, written when she was young, focuses a lot on identity and independence. Thirst, written after the passing of her longtime partner, is about faith and grief. And Red Bird, published in 2008, is about anger. Still writing in her trademark style, Oliver lets loose about capitalism, climate change, and the war in Iraq. There's still themes of nature and love, but her anger is unmistakable. And I kind of love it? I think it's a more open, more honest Oliver, and I'm all about it. Please appreciate the poems I have bookmarked for you, since I lost them and had to go through the collection again: • •Maker of All Things, Even Healings •Summer Story •Watching a Documentary about Polar Bears Trying to Survive on the Melting Ice Floes •Of the Empire •Iraq •Swimming, One Day in August •Mornings at Blackwater •Love Sorrow •Of Love •I don't want to live a small life •There you were, and it was like spring •I will try • The Mary Oliver Project update: Loved: Blue Horses (2014), Dream Work (1986), Red Bird (2008) Liked: Thirst (2006), Felicity (2015), A Thousand Mornings (2012) via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CBVlUmZg5Os/
