Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff is a book I can’t believe I didn’t read sooner. This novel, the first in a trilogy, is a mixed media narrative told through redacted documents, dossier pages, schematics, and concrete poetry and it is SO COOL. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It largely focuses on Kady and Ezra, two exes navigating the end of the world as they know it. As they struggle to find their way back to each other and you know, SURVIVE, they uncover dark truths about rival tech companies warring over resources - truths those companies would like to keep secret, thankyouverymuch. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This book reminded me so much of Battlestar Galactica - tell me that Kady isn’t a young Starbuck! - with a splash of Wanderers by Chuck Wendig. There’s space travel, a pandemic…good times. (PS - probably neither of those are age appropriate recommendations for a young adult who enjoyed this book 😂) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I loved the unconventional medium, but also the way in which these authors unfolded a story and developed characters. It reminded me of an epistolary novel, which is funny because this is a space opera and there is tons of action! I don’t know if I’m even communicating clearly what it is I’m trying to say here, but my point is this: I really enjoyed Illuminae and will definitely be seeking out the next book in the series, Gemina, soon! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ID: I’m holding a hardcover copy of Illuminae against a white wall. The book jacket is semi transparent to show elements printed on the cover, a hint at the mixed media elements of the book itself. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CRT44gcrcg3/
