Thanks to NetGalley for an advance copy of When the Stars Go Dark by Paula McLain, out tomorrow! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I requested a copy of this book, knowing nothing about it, on name recognition alone. I enjoyed The Paris Wife and Circling the Sun, and figured I was in for more of the same with this book - I was, and I wasn’t. I would classify her other books as historical fiction, and When the Stars Go Dark as a hybrid: historical fiction meets true crime, a story of grief and trauma and girls who disappear during a time when investigators are just beginning to develop the technological and psychological tools to catch the men responsible. Like the others books of hers I’ve read, When the Stars Go Dark gives a voice to women who have been overlooked, but unlike her other books, this one is darker and more violent. In her author’s note, which is a must for those who choose to pick this book up, McLain elaborates on her inspiration, and the way in which her own experiences as a foster child and sexual abuse survivor impacted the writing of this book. Her books are always beautifully done, but this one will stay with me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ TW: abuse, neglect, loss of a parent, loss of a child, sexual abuse ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Image description in alt text. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CNkQNafrdD_/
