Many readers are knee deep in V. E. Schwab’s latest release, but I recently picked up another of her books: The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. This one came highly recommended by a coworker (and many of you) and I’m so glad I finally picked it up. In a moment of desperation, Addie LaRue makes a deal with the devil: she’ll get to live a life of freedom, a life without end, but the cost is something she didn’t expect: she’ll be forgotten by everyone she meets. As Addie explores the confines of her curse and goes to war with the darkness responsible, she discovers she can leave her fingerprints on the world by becoming an artists’ muse. It is almost enough — until she crosses paths with someone who remembers. The premise of this book is so fun and executed so well. I loved the idea of exploring the cost of humanity — and of bargaining it away — and what it means to live a life that is not the one you thought you’d live. So much of this book is about legacy and the impact we have, big or small, on the people we love and by extension, the world; to quote Lin-Manuel Miranda: “What is a legacy? It’s planting seeds in a garden you never get to see / I wrote some notes at the beginning of a song someone will sing for me” — that’s Addie to a T! This was my first V. E. Schwab book but won’t be my last. I did a combo of print/audio reading and Julia Whelan, as always, does a phenomenal job with the narration. 📸: I’m holding up a kindle displaying the ebook cover of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue up against a brick wall. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/DMiBq0HgS73/
