Shoutout to @existential_dreaderino for recommending They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us by Hanif Abdurraqib! I love that we are still talking books after all these years. I read Abdurraqib’s There’s Always This Year in 2024 and couldn’t stop recommending it, but They Can’t Kill Us topped it when I didn’t think that was possible. I’ve always felt about music the way some people feel about church, and this essay collection gave voice to that so beautifully. It explores music, celebrity, and pop culture through the lens of race, class, gender, and politics, the “present” version of him delightfully appearing during the audiobook recording to annotate his past self. Abdurraqib’s writing is itself a kind of music — a book I know I’ll be recommending for years to come. 📸: A kindle displaying the ebook cover of They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us sits on a white shelf. I’m reaching out to touch the kindle with one hand. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/DHOIxrjgzPT/
