“What happens to you doesn’t belong to you, only half concerns you…it’s not yours. Not yours only.” After realizing that the epigraph from An American Marriage came from a book of poetry — Citizen: An American Lyric by Claudia Rankine — that I already had in my collection, I had to pick it up. It’s a fascinating mixed media collection of poetry, photographs, and art that explores racial micro and macro aggressions in the media and, on a personal level, for the author. I began by listening to the audiobook but quickly found that the experience was heightened by reading my physical copy, as it contained images not within the audio. It was fun to take a little trip down the rabbit hole by using the epigraph of a book as the inspiration for my next read, and being able to see the many parallels between the two! ID: I’m holding up a paperback copy of Citizen with one hand. There’s a chain link fence in front of a taller wood fence visible in the background, along with a sliver of treetops and blue sky. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/Cq0S_QZLsCW/
