An American Marriage by Tayari Jones Jones chose an epigraph by Claudia Rankine that captures her novel: “What happens to you doesn’t belong to you, only half concerns you. It’s not yours. Not yours only.” This is a story of characters learning to live in the aftermath of a shared cataclysm, an event that fundamentally reshapes who they are. It is told from multiple perspectives so that we can see what Rankine meant when she wrote that it is only. This book is achingly sad from the beginning, the kind of novel that had me and my friend, with whom I was reading, stopping to text each other about the grief that we felt for these characters. Our book club had a great time discussing this — it may be our favorite book of the year so far! ID: I’m holding a hardcover copy of An American Marriage.
