I decided to pick up Night Secrets by Kat Martin because it felt like a read Annie would approve of (I just finished Practice Makes Perfect by Sarah Adams, which has a character who loves pirate romances!) While Marcus isn’t technically a pirate, he is a captain whose heart belongs to the sea, and he’s appropriately bossy and spends lots of time staring dramatically over the helm of his ship with the wind in his hair. Brandy, a spirited redhead who’s been in love with Marcus since she was a girl, decides to embark on the adventure of a lifetime by stowing away on his ship. This is part one. Part two follows their second chance at love following an accident that has left Marcus unable to walk. This is an older historical (‘99) and definitely reads that way — there’s a lot of focus on her being the only woman on the ship, and an attempted sexual assault (not by the MMC) that I didn’t love. My major complaint though is a complaint that I have about a lot of second chance romances: there is too much story being told in just one book for us to really dig into anything. I loved the idea of the plot more than it’s execution, and my lingering impression is that reading the book felt like someone describing the plot to me. There just wasn’t enough for me to connect to the characters and immerse myself. While I did enjoy reading a book set in a different part of the world than a typical historical (Charleston, then the Caribbean, then Cornwall), it just wasn’t a favorite. Every book isn’t for everyone, and that’s fine. ID1: I’m holding a mass market paperback copy of Night Secrets with one hand. There’s a lawn and trees visible in the background. ID2: I’m holding the same book, open to the stepback. ID3: I’m holding two copies of Night Secrets (🤦🏻‍♀️) in one hand, displaying the original and newer cover. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CrDvtK6rJDA/
