Thanks to @stmartinspress for sending me an advance copy of The Austen Affair by Madeline Bell, out September 16th! Still reeling in the wake of her mother’s death, Tess lands the role of a lifetime in an adaptation of Northanger Abbey, but worries her lack of chemistry with stiff upper crust costar Hugh will ruin her chance to be seen as a serious actor — that is, until they find themselves transported back to the Regency era, where doing a little method acting may be the only way they can make it home again. I had so much fun reading this one! It doesn’t take itself too seriously and therefore you don’t have to either. The literary (and cinematic) Easter eggs abound, from Frankenstein to Romeo and Juliet to — of course — Jane Austen’s novels and adaptations. Shoutout to Madeline Bell for giving some lesser appreciated Austen some love! Though silly at times, the book has a beautiful heart that centers on love, family, grief; by the time Tess and Hugh get over the enemies and become lovers, you can’t help but understand why. 📸: A kindle displaying the ebook of The Austen Affair sits on a white shelf.
