The Trouble with Dukes by Grace Burrows is a historical that delves into conversations about power and those who wield it: in abuse of women and soldiers of lower rank and in English prejudice against Scots. In spite of this *and* the PTSD experienced by multiple characters, Burrows manages to keep things pretty lighthearted. Megan and Hamish are absolutely darling — in one of their first meetings he compares her to a scone (complimentary) — and while Hamish doesn’t really understand the elaborate social gymnastics required of English society, Megan is more than willing to become his tutor! This book has one of my favorite micro tropes: dancing together but not *in* the ballroom. I really appreciated how Burrows chose to resolve the conflict at the end of the novel. This is the first book in a series, but I just wasn’t jiving with the second, so I’m setting it down — TBD if I ever finish it! 📸: I’m holding up a kindle displaying the ebook cover of The Trouble with Dukes. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/DItaNKCxbNS/
