The Women by Kristin Hannah was my first KH read! Because of its length, I worried I wouldn’t finish it in time for my book club meeting, but I flew through it in 24 hours, gripped by the narrative and unable to stop thinking or talking about it until it was through. I used to read a lot of historical fiction, much of it focused on WWII, so it was refreshing to see another period highlighted. Frankie is a good girl. She follows the rules and does what’s expected of her, until she confounds everyone’s plans — even her own — when she enlists as an Army combat nurse and ships out to Vietnam. Though fictional, The Women is based on very real experiences of female veterans, and it reminded me of two of my nonfiction favorites: A Woman of No Importance and The Woman They Could Not Silence — stories of women navigating a world that isn’t built for them and doesn’t respect them, and working to make that world a better place anyway. 📸: A library hardback copy of The Women lays on a table decoupaged with images from The New Yorker. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/DFaX4k6S0FI/
